This Savoie snare drum is one of the standout pieces in my collection. It showcases the beautiful sonic qualities of Walnut and Birch, but it doesn’t just blend the two woods—it fully embodies the essence of both. The walnut contributes deep, warm tones, while the birch brings a bright, articulate attack. Walnut offers a rich, low fundamental tone, while birch provides a natural EQ with a strong attack and solid low-end presence. The 13″ diameter, combined with the warmth and body of the materials, creates a truly unique sound that stands out from all the other snares in my collection.
This exceptional snare drum was a generous gift from Greg Savoie, a dear friend and talented student. Since I received it, this Walnut/Birch Stave Snare Drum has been a staple in both my recording and live performances. Despite owning over 50 snare drums, this drum has become one of my favorites and is by far the most frequently used in my setup. It has truly become an essential part of my sound. I’ve received endless compliments from bandmates and fans alike, and it continues to impress every time I play it.
